Visual and Performing Arts Department

The department has ten instructors across all five arts disciplines.

  • Six visual arts teachers provide instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, cartooning/animation, and art history.
  • One of these teachers has established a new film program,  giving South Gate High School a truly comprehensive arts program.
  • In the area of performing arts, South Gate has a dance teacher providing instruction in modern and traditional dance,
  • a theatre teacher providing instruction in drama and play production,
  • a band director teaching a full instrumental music program, and a classically trained vocal music teacher.

By providing these five pathways of Arts Instruction, the Department prepares students for entrance to the University of California and to the California State University. Students are required by both institutions to have one full year of art instruction in one of the five disciplines listed above.  Vicki Barkley, Chairperson
