Visual and Performing Arts Department           

The department has ten instructors across all five arts disciplines.

• Six visual arts teachers provide instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, cartooning/animation, and art history.
• One of these teachers has established a new film program,  giving South Gate High School a truly comprehensive arts program.

By providing these pathways of Arts Instruction, the Department prepares students for entrance to the University of California and to the California State University. Students are required by both institutions to have one full year of art instruction in one of the five disciplines listed above.  At South Gate, students have a wide range of options for basic university preparation for non arts majors, and the deeper preparation necessary for a future career in the arts. The Visual and Performing Arts faculty is proactive in encouraging students to consider careers in the arts, and to take advantage of opportunities provided by local arts schools, and community groups.
